Singing Time

Lead the children in a time of singing.

Memory verse
LET’s Talk

Objective:
You will use this section to set the context of today’s lesson.

Things Needed: Wrap a box and write “Lost and found” on it. Trace your hand on a piece of paper and cut it out. Put the paper cutout inside the box.

Method:

Tell the children that in 5 weeks including this one, you are going to discuss about important things that have lost their honor. These important things make extraordinary people. If only the kids would find those lost things in their lives, then they too would be become great human beings.

Show the box and ask them to guess what the lost thing in the box could be. Once the children come up with few guess, show them what is inside and share the following introduction:

Let’s say you are talking part in a drama in the church and there are two roles remaining to take – King and servant. Which one would you like to choose? King? or the servant? Today we are going to discuss what Jesus would choose. Are you ready?

Bible Event

Bible Portion: Matthew 20:20-28
Event Outline:

James and John (disciples of Jesus) had a good mother. She wanted her sons to live as honorable men. The mother went to Jesus and nominated her sons for the first two positions in his kingdom. Jesus told them that the decision was not his. The remaining disciples were very angry when they heard this. They fought with the two brothers and were upset with them for wanting to be respected more than others. Jesus heard this and taught them an important lesson. He called all the disciples together and told them this, “If any of you wants to become great, he must serve others as a servant. If one of you wants to come first, let him serve like a slave”.

It’s the opposite of what most people around you are doing, isn’t it? They usually bully a weak person to make themselves look bigger; They gossip about someone to make themselves feel better. Have you seen the wrong things some people do to get above others? Can you describe what you saw? (Let the children respond) What do you think is the right thing to do in each of those situations as Jesus taught? (Let the children answer). Can you tell me how to live as Jesus taught in the situations you mentioned? (Let the children answer).

Doesn’t it seem difficult to live as Jesus taught? But guess what! You and I have a role model who has shown us how to do it. Can you guess who that is? Yes! Jesus himself. When Jesus came to earth 2000 years ago, he did not come as a king wanting others to serve him. Instead, he went around like a servant doing good to those who loved him and those who hated him. If we live like that, God will raise us up before all men one day.

GAme TIME

Materials Required: Small towel; Make a paper crown;

Method:

Have the children sit in a circle. Choose a catcher and ask them to go outside the circle and look away. Ask the catcher to hold the paper crown. Then choose a child in the circle to be the king. Give him/her the towel. They should hide the towel by sitting on it. The catcher should then try to guess the king. They should place the paper crown on the child they think is the king. Reward the catcher if they get it right. Continue the game as time allows.

Discuss the following at the end of the game:

  • “Why did we give the crown to the one with the towel and call him/her king? Is not the towel used by servants to clean a thing”.
  • Answer: We did so because Jesus taught us that whoever wants to be the greatest must first be the servant of others and honor others above themselves.
CRAFT TIME

Materials Required: One Color sheet/ newspaper (A5 size) for each kid, markers, scissors

Method:

  • Fold the A5 sheet in a zig-zag manner.
  • Cutout a paper doll that is connected.
  • Ask the children to write the names of their peers and juniors that they can serve.
  • Remind them the day’s lesson again – Serve others and God will lift you up in due time.

WRAP UP

Show the paper hand from the “Lost and found” box again and ask the children to tell you what it means (Serve others and you will get to the top). Lead the children in a time of commitment and prayer.
