Singing Time

Lead the children in a time of singing.

Memory verse
LET’s Talk

Objective:
You will use this section to set the context of today’s lesson.

Things Needed: Wrap a box and write “Lost and found” on it. Cut long strip of paper and join them together to make an even longer paper. Roll it and put it in the box.

Method:

Tell the children that over the next 5 weeks, including this one, you are going to discuss 5 important things that have been mostly lost in the life. These important things make ordinary people extraordinary. Encourage your children to listen carefully to these truths to become better people.

Show the “Lost and Found” box to a child and ask them to take out what is there in it.

Ask them to unroll the long paper. Then read the Memory verse of today.

The Bible says to have a long life one of the criteria is to obey your parents. But it is quite hard isn’t it to obey our parents? We are going to talk about that today.

Bible Event

Bible Portion: Luke 2:41-52
Event Outline:
Every year Jesus’ parents would take him to Jerusalem for the Passover. They would travel together in large groups. Have you been on a family trip with your relatives? Was it really fun? (Let the kids answer)

Today I am going to share what happened on one such trip. Jesus was 12 years old. Jesus’ family went to Jerusalem as usual. They worshiped God with their friends and family. After the service, Mary and Joseph, the earthly parents of Jesus, began their journey home with their family, friends and relatives.

Meanwhile, Jesus found some Bible Teachers. He listened to what they had to say. He interacted with them, asked them questions and answered theirs. They were all amazed at how Jesus spoke with such wisdom. How do you think Jesus was able to speak like that? (Answer: God became man. His name is Jesus)

A day is almost over. Jesus’ parents wanted to ask him something and so they called out, “Jesus! Come here!”. Jesus could not be heard in their group. They thought he must be with their other friends and rushed to check with the other group walking nearby. Jesus was not there either. Can you imagine their panic? They rushed back to Jerusalem. Jerusalem was overcrowded because of the festival. They searched for Jesus everywhere but they couldn’t find him. Do you know where he was? (Let the children answer)

Yes! He was talking to the teachers about the Word of God. On the third day of their quest, Mary and Joseph saw a large crowd listening to a little boy. They went closer to see who it was. Who do you think? Yes! Jesus. His mother asked him, “What have you done? We have been looking for you everywhere.” Jesus told them that he must be in the temple. But as his parents called him, he obeyed. He returned home and devoted himself to them for 18 years until it was time for him to do the work of God full-fledged.

Can you imagine how hard it must have been to obey for Jesus? Jesus desired to talk to the people and help them. Instead of choosing what he wanted, he chose his parents’ orders. This way he showed us an example that obedience is better than any achievement or anything else you can do.

CRAFT TIME

Materials Required: One rectangular card, two heart cut-outs.

Method:

  • Make the heart card as shown. Stick the hearts together halfway to make 2 pages. Stick these heart pages in the rectangular chart.
  • Ask the children to take turns and share which of their parents’ ask is more hard to obey.
  • On first page ask the kids to write those down.
  • On the second page ask them to write, “Obedience is better”.
GAME TIME

Materials Required: Heart Craft done above

Method:

  • Make the children stand in a big circle.
  • Ask them to hold the cards they did in the craft section in their hand.
  • Stand in the center. Put on a tag named “Jesus” if you can.
  • Start with any one of the kids. Call out one thing they have written in the card, and say, “Jesus tells you to …” while calling it out. For example, “Jesus tells you not play with mobile for a long time”.
  • Now every child who decides to obey that command should take one step closer to the inside of the circle (towards you).
  • Repeat the game by calling out different actions. The kids who reach the center first are the winners.
  • Reward them with a small candy if possible.

Message: Whenever it is hard to obey your parents, think of Jesus himself asking you to do it. Won’t you obey Jesus? Shall we pray asking Jesus to help us obey even when it is difficult? (lead the kids in a time of prayer)

WRAP UP
