introduction
Let’s say you have a huge problem to solve. You are quite upset and afraid. Would you go to your friend and ask for help? Yes! Most of us would go to our friends because we trust them.
Today I am going to introduce you to a great king who was very wise. He saved himself and his kingdom from a big trouble by going to his best friend for help. Shall we begin?
Memory Verse
Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. John 16:24 NLT
In a white board or a chart paper, write the verse in big letters. Divide the verse into small sections. Hide each section by taping a piece of paper on it. On the cover of these papers write numbers starting from 1. The children should guess the words of the verse hidden under the paper covers. This would be impossible. Then ask them to choose on of the covers by calling out its number. Remove the cover which they choose. This would reveal a portion of the verse. Ask them to read that portion out loud. One by one remove the covers they choose and help them memorize the portion of the verse along the way.
Message: You did not know what the verse was until you asked to remove the covers. You receive when you ask and when you ask God, you will surely receive an answer.
Bible Event
Bible Portion: 2 Kings 18:17 – 19: 37
Story: Hezekiah talks to God
Message:
Hezekiah was a great king. He had a relationship with God. One day a powerful enemy came to overthrow him and his kingdom. The enemy mocked his army. He said that no one can fight against him and win. The enemy said that the God Hezekiah believed in was powerless before him. What would you do if your naysayers kept telling you, “You’re going to lose?” won’t you get tired?
But King Hezekiah knew God and His power. He went straight to God and said everything the enemy said. This is what we call ‘prayer’. You can tell God whatever is on your mind.
What do you think happened next? God heard Hezekiah’s prayer. He helped Hezekiah and gave him victory. You can talk to God about anything. He listens to you because He loves you.
Activity
Give each child a piece of paper and ask them to write a request to God. It could be about anything – their family/ friends/ broken toy. They need not write their names on it. Ask them to put it in a bowl.
Pick a chit from the box and show the children how to make a one liner prayer. Ex. If the chit says, ‘My mom is sick’, the prayer can be “Dear Jesus, please heal my mom. In Jesus name, Amen.”
After you have shown a few examples, throw a ball to one of the children. Whoever gets the ball should pick a prayer chit from the box. Ask that child to make a short prayer using the example you showed. Then they should pass the ball to someone else in the crowd. That child will pick the next prayer chit and make the one liner prayer.
Game
Game: Play the age-old game Chinese whisper. Make the children sit in a circle. Wisper a small message into the ears of the child next to you. This child should whisper it into the ears of the person next to them. This should continue until the message reaches the last child in the circle. He/she should tell the message loudly. In most cases, the original message would be lost. Repeat the game by starting with a different person in the circle. In the final round of the game, share the message directly with the last person. This time, the message will not not be lost.
Message: Many people try to talk to God through somebody else. They want someone else to pray for them. God wants you to talk to Him directly. Will you talk to Him?
