Activity: Begin by leading the children in singing a few familiar songs. Then introduce and teach them a simple rhyme to teach today’s lesson.

Rhyme: Follows a similar tune to “Twinkle, Twinkle little star”

In the Beginning
God made heaven and earth.
Heaven and earth,
God made in the beginning.

Earth was formless (formless),
Earth was empty (Empty),
Earth was dark (very dark),
But my God was not afraid!

What are you biggest fears today?
Make your sweat and run away.
Tell Jesus about your fears,

Things Needed: Paper and drawing materials (crayons/ markers)

Activity:

Ask the children to close their eyes tightly and tell you what they see. Nothing—it’s dark.
Then ask them to close their ears and tell you what they hear. Nothing—it’s very quiet.

Explain that before God created trees, birds, animals, and fish, the world was dark and quiet like this. Ask them if they would feel happy in such a place. Most children will say they would feel scared.

Now ask, Was God scared?
Open the Bible and read Genesis 1:3. Help the children see that God was not afraid at all. He moved in the darkness and filled the empty, quiet world with life.

Talk about fear by sharing a few examples the children can relate to. Begin with common fears—spiders, lizards, or snakes—and then gently move to deeper fears, such as being alone, not having a friend to play with, or parents fighting.

Next, give each child a sheet of paper and drawing materials. Ask them to draw something they are afraid of. After they finish, invite those who are comfortable to share their drawings with the class.

Conclude by reminding the children that Jesus is not afraid of anything. Encourage them to tell their fears to Jesus and ask Him for help. Lead the class in a short prayer together.

Note to Teachers:
Children are often very open when sharing fears. When sensitive fears come up, remember that our role is not to fix their problems, but to help them bring their fears to Jesus and learn to trust Him (Proverbs 11:13).
